Rehearsing Riddle

Our first and only rehearsal of the big band Riddle arrangements of Love is Here to Stay and Ain't that a Kick in the Head along with my orchestrations for concert band went surprisingly well. That is always a funny thing to say. Let's just say it went well. If anything, I may have overwritten the concert band parts on Ain't that a Kick in the Head. However, with a little more individual practice before our concert on May 25th, those thick textures may thin out as people become more comfortable with the rhythms and notes, providing a tighter ensemble sound. This joint adventure is very exciting and hopefully it will not be a one-and-done thing.

I too thought the joint rehearsal went well last Tuesday night. There were times, especially in "Ain't That A Kick in the Head", however when the singer was almost inaudible due to the bands playing together. But with one more rehearsal to take place this coming week, I'm sure we could iron that out so that both bands are listening for that. For the actual performance, where would the singers be standing, on the stage or on the floor close to Michael, the conductor?

From the perspective of being in both the Big Band and the Concert Band, it was interesting to hear how the pieces were trying to fit together. The arrangements were fine but the textures of the groups were a bit different and both groups were adjusting to differences in style. Swing, syncopation and other elements were struggling at points, but the rehearsal really helped bring things together. Another week of rehearsal and the excitement of the concert will hopefully result in a coordinated performance between the groups.
