About Us

“After Hours” reflected both the commitment of the original members who wanted to play jazz and swing repertoire after their regular community band rehearsals."

Started in 2006 by members of the Newmarket Citizens Band, the After Hours Big Band has become a vital member of the York Region music scene. “After Hours” reflected both the commitment of the original members who wanted to play big band repertoire after their regular community band rehearsals, and the late evenings in which they would enjoy each other’s company.

While celebrating swing music of the 1930s and the 1940s, the band showcases repertoire from a variety of contemporary jazz and popular artists. With the leadership of noted educator and trombonist Dr. Michael Kearns and with the stirring and soulful vocals of George Marian and Jessica Owen, this band has turned heads in the GTA. Add one of the finest trumpet sections in York Region, a beautifully blended trombone quartet, five unique voices on saxophone, and a rhythm section that cannot be missed, you have a band appropriate for any occasion. The AHBB continues to thrill audiences at concerts and festivals in Ontario, such as, the Newmarket Music Festival, Aurora Jazz+ Music Festival, the Unionville Big Band Festival, and numerous private events and fund-raisers in the York Region.
